If you want your providers and clinical staff to be more productive, make sure they have the tools and technology to help them be more efficient and productive during the day.

Oftentimes we want our staff to do more, but we don't take the time to understand how to make their jobs easier. In healthcare, we ask providers to see more patients, but if they have a clunky tablet, slow internet connection, or a bunch of manual processes, they're going to resist your demands to see more patients. They’re probably already staying late to get caught up on charting, so asking them to see more patients just means longer work days and more frustration.

Steve Jobs said "You cannot mandate productivity, you must provide the tools to let people become their best," and I couldn't agree more. Investing in new technology, high-speed internet, a user-friendly electronic health record, and cutting out the wasted time of manual processes will go a long way in increasing everyone's productivity and increasing the bottom line to become a more sustainable business.

At my health center, everyone was trained in Six Sigma and LEAN quality improvement frameworks. Without training people how to identify where their process and tools aren’t helping them be more efficient, they will just keep limping along and battling their old, outdated technology all day. Teaching them how to automate and streamline processes, and identify what tools and technology are slowing them down will greatly improve their morale, and make them happy to see more patients.

Give your staff the tools they need to be at the top of their game and increase productivity. It is definitely worth the investment.
