Recently, I coached a nursing director at an FQHC who said, 'I'm a good manager, but I'm not really a leader.' Her perception of leadership felt unattainable—something only natural-born leaders could achieve.
As we dug into that a bit more, she described leadership as something grandiose and out of reach. I get it—I used to feel the same way. I thought true leaders possessed innate abilities, like a rare talent for singing or solving complex math problems.
Over time, I’ve learned that leadership isn’t an inherent gift—it’s a skill anyone can develop with guidance and practice.
I've held leadership roles for most of my career. At 19, I ran my mom's company while she dealt with some health issues. At 25, I started a county health department and built it into a full-service public health department offering human and environmental health services.
I am not a natural-born leader, and I would argue that there are no natural-born leaders. We must be taught, mentored, and trained to be good leaders. We must also practice, experience successes and challenges, and keep learning from those experiences.
I have coached and mentored more than 200 professionals, and most of them don't feel equipped to be 'good' leaders. That's why I created my Leadership Academy for leaders and aspiring leaders at Federally Qualified Health Centers.
