When someone says they feel "stuck" in their job, it’s often a sign of boredom or lack of purpose. The key to helping them move forward is uncovering what’s really going on beneath the surface.
Sometimes, finding the root cause can be difficult.
👉Do they mean they feel bored?
👉Do they mean they don't feel fulfilled?
👉Are they unhappy with their job?
Finding the root cause of the 'stuck' feeling can help you help them find a way out from under those feelings.
I was recently working with a clinical director at a health center who said he felt "stuck." When I asked him to explain why he felt that way, he said he couldn't figure it out. He was grateful for his job and paid well, but something wasn't sitting right.
Talking through it some more, I kept hearing him say it didn't feel like the same position anymore. "I'm a clinician because I love working with patients, but since I became the director I feel like all I do is go to meetings and write reports." Aa ha, there it was. He has lost his purpose.
I see this a lot with clinicians transitioning into leadership roles. Their focus moves from patient care to KPIs and productivity, leaving them unsatisfied with their purpose and values.
The best way to help them is to ask them what is important to them:
🤔Do they need to see more patients?
🤔Do they need to be involved in projects that give them purpose?
🤔Do they need to develop their leadership skills so they feel better equipped to manage their team?
Don't let a good employee leave because they feel stuck. Help them find their purpose, identify what is important, and create a roadmap to get them unstuck.
