Is Your Health Center Struggling to Attract New Patients, Increase Revenue, and Reduce Costs?

Aug 07, 2024

When I became the CEO of PureView Health Center in Helena, MT, it was in dire straits. A friend of mine was on the Board and asked if I would apply for the CEO position. I remember Googling it's prior name and seeing ALL the issues in the local paper. Staff being laid off, $800,000 deficit (growing exponentially every day!), declining patient numbers, and not being able to recruit a medical doctor in 5 years. To put it bluntly, I didn't think there was a big enough life raft for this rapidly sinking ship.

'Well,' I thought 'it can't get much worse, so I might as well try to save it (like I had the previous two health entities I'd run).' My goal the first year was to break even. We rebranded, tightened up our operations, started a marketing campaign, and launched a communication campaign in the communities we served. By the end of the year, we had increased patients by 1,000, hired a medical doctor and mid-level, hired a dentist, and started behavioral health services. We not only broke even after the first year, we had $100,000 to put into the reserve at the end of the year. And, we had millions in the reserve when I left my CEO position last year.

Running an FQHC is hard in the best of economic times. Running an FQHC post-COVID and trying to maintain a healthy margin, is extremely challenging!

There is hope, though. Even though the healthcare landscape and workforce landscape has changed, the foundational business practices that I implemented at my health center still work to attract new patients, increase revenue, reduce costs, and even plan strategically for growth.

When you join our CEO Connect Boot Camp you're going to learn all of the strategies I used to bring a health center from barely keeping the doors open to a leading provider of healthcare in our community. In our monthly workshops we'll be bringing in experts to cover topics like maximizing your insurance contracts and reimbursements, effective marketing tactics, minimizing operational inefficiencies (which will increase productivity), and maximizing the 340b program. But, more importantly, you'll be part of a community of your peers in health centers across the country, and you'll make meaningful connections with them during the 5-month boot camp. Being part of our community is going to help you love your job again!

Doors are now open to the CEO Connect Boot Camp. If you register and pay by August 16th, you'll also get a 60-minute private coaching call with me or my partner, Steve Weinman, and you can pick our brains, problem solve, create a growth plan with us, or just use our 50+ years of combined experience to get through something difficult.
