My secret to transforming team dynamics...
No matter what type of team you're leading, a daily 5-minute huddle is a game-changing approach to ensure everyone is aligned and working consistently toward collective goals.
Daily huddles are not a new concept. In healthcare, they can make or break the flow of the patient schedule. But a 5-minute daily check-in doesn't just benefit patient care teams; it's valuable to all teams and one of the easiest team-building strategies you can implement.
When I coach leaders and get them to start the 5-minute daily huddle, I see their teams improve communication, get more done during the day, operate from the same playbook, and reduce email noise. I have never seen a team negatively impacted by a daily huddle, but there are a few guidelines to follow to reap the most benefits from it.
1️⃣ Include remote workers: Use Zoom or Teams to maintain the personal touch. Make sure cameras are on every time.
2️⃣ Set a timer: If you or your team members tend to get sidetracked or a little wordy, a timer helps everyone stay on point. Huddles should be quick touchpoints, not meetings.
3️⃣ Stand up: Standing up keeps it casual and brings a different energy to the huddle.
4️⃣ Set a fixed time: Choose a time that works for everyone. The start of the day is a great time, but if it needs to be mid-morning for everyone to attend, so be it.
5️⃣ Have a simple agenda: You can ask three simple questions:
👉What was an accomplishment from yesterday?
👉What is one goal you have for today?
👉Are there any barriers you're facing and need support with?
6️⃣ Rotate leadership: I love giving everyone the chance to lead the huddle. It gets people out of their shells and helps you spot future leaders.
