Is culture just a buzzword?

Not at all. I believe company culture is a leader's top priority and top recruiting strategy in today's workforce landscape.

But what IS company culture? I define it as the collective understanding of 'what we are, who we are, how we behave, what we celebrate, and what is expected of us.' Culture is not a one-time effort. It is something we are always building in our organizations.

âś… A healthy culture means intentionally building trust, safety, fun, and commitment within our organization. Most importantly, culture starts with leadership. Employees look to their leaders for behavior models, and if a leader struggles to build a strong culture, it will significantly impact their team.

In a study done on recruitment.com, 77% of US workers consider a company's culture before applying for a job, and 71% of high-demand employees will look elsewhere if they don't feel supported by the organization's culture.

âť—Even more surprising, more than half of the workers place company culture above salary among factors contributing to job satisfaction.

Company culture impacts everything from employer branding to the ability to recruit and retain good employees. If your turnover rate is high, look inward first. How can culture be improved? Do leaders need help consistently building trust and safety with their teams?

You can't afford not to focus on improving the organization's culture. Doing so will save hundreds of thousands of dollars in turnover and recruiting costs and have a healthy and happy workforce.
